Global Water Dances

Global Water Dances (www.GlobalWaterDances.org) began as a collective idea of an international group of individuals, certified by the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS), with decades of experience in producing Movement Choirs: events that use community dance to create social cohesion through non-verbal communication. We connect and support a global community of choreographers and dancers to inspire action and international collaboration for water issues through the universal language of dance. 2021 is our sixth Global Water Dances event and our 10th year working and dancing together for safe water.

Coney Island Art Dance - CIAD

Coney Island Art Dance - CIAD is a site-specific event of Global Water Dance. CIAD will engage local artists in Brooklyn, New York to raise people’s awareness about Coney Island’s pollution from the individuals, infrastructure and natural storms. Artists of different backgrounds will improvise artworks and will be documented into a short film. After the event, the artworks and film will be exhibited on CIAD website. CIAD is a site-specific event, including a Sharing Session, a Group Dance Session, and a Creation Session.

  • 1 Sharing Session: First, we will begin with a Sharing Session, a show of short pieces (related to water) from the artists. We encourage each artist to bring a short piece (3minutes) to the event day and show / share with others, i.e. dance, music, instrument, costume, painting, etc.

  • 2 GWD Group Dance Session: After the Sharing Session, we will dance together as a group, according to the official instruction of Global Water Dance. It’s a simultaneous choreography done by all the performers worldwide to the same piece of music, connecting participants and audience globally. The dancing motif is Dehydration - Raindrop - Pool - Ripple - River - Waves in the ocean - Circle of Unity - Splashing freely - Finale.

  • 3 Creation Session: The 20 artists are encouraged to individually improvise on-site, right after the group dance, as a reflective and intuitive improvisation to the event and community. The work might be small and short, such as an improvised motion piece, a 4-line poem, a half-minute a-cappella, a sequential guitar chords, a short monologue, a sketch with pencil or on an ipad, etc. The artist improvises and takes videos of the short pieces on-site, then sends them to the CIAD team, for the online exhibition from June 15th to July 31th on CIAD Website.

    Art, Dance, Community, Environment

We celebrate water and life through the art of dance. Dance is a universal language, a way to eliminate the barrier among us, and enables us to create, communicate and appreciate art freely and equally, beyond time and space. Holding this belief, how do our local artists respond to the issue of water and environment?
