Walden ART DANCE

PERFORMANCE ART FESTIVAL

Global Water Dances - GWD

Global Water Dances (www.GlobalWaterDances.org) began as a collective idea of an international group of individuals, certified by the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS), with decades of experience in producing Movement Choirs: events that use community dance to create social cohesion through non-verbal communication. We connect and support a global community of choreographers and dancers to inspire action and international collaboration for water issues through the universal language of dance. 2023 is our seventh Global Water Dances event and our 12th year working and dancing together for safe water.

Walden Art Dance - WAD

Walden Pond was once home to the renowned author, Henry David Thoreau, (with a book of same name published in 1854). Thoreau’s sojourn at Walden started a long tradition of people coming to the pond and its surrounding woods for recreation and inspiration. Now here becomes the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a State Reservation. Walden pond suffers from pollution recently due to waste from high numbers of visitors, excessive use of fertilizers, as well as global warming.

Walden Art Dance - WAD is a site-specific event of Global Water Dance. WAD will engage local artists in Boston to raise people’s awareness about Walden Pond’s pollution. Artists of different backgrounds will create their individual small artworks and collaborate to create a multimedia dance piece, and the performance will be documented into a short film. After the event, the works and film will be exhibited locally for educational purposes.

Art, Dance, Community, Environment

We celebrate water and life through the art of dance. Dance is a universal language, a way to eliminate the barrier among us, and enables us to create, communicate and appreciate art freely and equally, beyond time and space. Holding this belief, how do our local artists respond to the issue of water and environment?

Call for Artists

Art is a powerful way in raising love and motivating individuals within the local neighborhood, and Walden Art Dance - WAD would be a chance to cultivate the consciousness of environmental issues in the artist community, and spread the idea further.

With the idea of art, we would call for 10 to 15 artists living in Greater Boston, with diverse cultural backgrounds and working media, joining us through the process of sharing, dancing, and creating.

At the same time, everyone is welcome to join the art dance community, dance or watch our event on-site.

When:    June 4th, Sunday, 11am-12:30pm est.

Where:   Walden Pond, Concord, MA 01742

Event

WAD is a live event, including a Group Dance Session, and a Sharing Session.

There is no regulation for costumes. Several photographers would document the event on-site. We will release a short documentary film on the pop-up gallery on WAD website and the Global Water Dance official channel.

1 GWD Group Dance Session

First, we will dance together as a group in the open space of Walden Pond, according to the official instructions of Global Water Dance. It’s a simultaneous choreography done by all the performers worldwide to the same piece of music, connecting participants and audience globally. The dancing motif is Dehydration - Raindrop - Pool - Ripple - River - Waves in the ocean - Circle of Unity - Splashing freely - Finale. And a reference video could be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTk5Y6wizoA.

2 Sharing Session

After the Group Dance Session, we will walk together to the Thoreau Cabin Site. Here we will have a Sharing Session, a show of short pieces (related to water) from the artists. We encourage each artist to bring a short piece (3minutes) to the event day and show / share with others, i.e. dance, music, instrument, costume, painting, etc.

 Online Exhibition and Film

We will release a short documentary film on the WAD Website and the Global Water Dance official channel. WAD Team sincerely welcomes everyone to dance together on-site on June 4th. Looking forward to meeting all of you!
